As 2017 draws to an end, it is time to reflect on the various ODI records staggered so far. When discussing the impish numbers surrounding the bat and ball, pundits often dwell on aspects such as Strike Rate, Average, Economy Rate and a few more to portray the true efficiency of a player.

But which parameter then is good enough to assess the skills of fielders or wicketkeepers for that matter? Wicket keeping, in this rapidly changing era of ODI’s, remains an extremely critical aspect of the game. The middle overs constitute a significant portion of the game, and it is here where a proactive wicketkeeper can make all the difference by effecting a quick stumping, which can eventually have a great impact upon the overall outcome.

2017 as a whole saw some fine displays of wicket keeping throughout the year as the old names continued making a mark for themselves with every passing day. Below, we have a look at the most number of dismissals effected by a wicketkeeper in an ODI in 2017.

    1. Shai Hope – 4:

In the second ODI of the home series against Pakistan earlier this year, Hope effected four dismissals behind the stumps to grab the fifth spot on this list. Having broken into the international scene in the recent past, Hope displays tremendous promise for the future and has already played some memorable knocks for his team in his brief stint. As Pakistan amassed 282, Hope was at the helm of four dismissals, which included three catches and a stumping.

    1. Peter Moor – 4

In what can easily be termed as the most thrilling contest of the year, Zimbabwean wicket keeper Peter Moor caused four dismissals behind the stumps, all being caught. Defending just a paltry 133 against Afghanistan, Zimbabwe needed some inspiration, and it was their wicket keeper Peter Moor who provided that. His catches on the bowling of Chris Mpofu were critical in causing the lower order collapse, which ultimately led to his team’s victory.

    1. Matthew Cross – 4

The Scotland wicketkeeper was involved in four dismissals during his side’s defence of 174 against UAE at Dubai. The 25-year-old gave his absolute best behind the stumps as he was involved in four dismissals, with three being catches and a solitary stumping.

    1. Mohammad Rizwan – 4:

Pakistan’s ODI series in Australia was an absolute disaster, and it could evoke just a handful of positives. Among those positives, was the wicketkeeping of Punjab youngster Mohammad Rizwan. In the first ODI of the series, Rizwan effected four dismissals as Pakistan had Australia on the mat with half the side back in the hunt for less than 100 on board. Rizwan’s catching played a key role in that as Australia’s middle order perished without much of a fight.

    1. Tom Latham – 5

It is hard to come terms to the fact that the list this year for the most dismissals by a wicket keeper in an ODI innings, is held by a makeshift keeper. Latham, the elegant southpaw from New Zealand, was at the helm of five dismissals against Australia in the first match of the three-match series in New Zealand. Defending a healthy 287 on board, Latham’s super productive keeping had Australia reeling, as he was behind three catches and a couple of stumpings.

Below, is the table showing the top 10 most number of dismissals effected by a wicketkeeper in an ODI this year.

Wicket Keeper Team Dismissals Against Venue
Tom Latham New Zealand 5 Australia Auckland
Mohammad Rizwan Pakistan 4 Australia Brisbane
Matthew Cross Scotland 4 UAE Dubai
Peter Moor Zimbabwe 4 Afghanistan Harare
Shai Hope West Indies 4 Pakistan Providence
Jos Buttler England 4 South Africa Leeds
Sarfaraz Ahmed Pakistan 4 India The Oval
Shai Hope West Indies 4 India North Sound
Sarfaraz Ahmed Pakistan 4 Sri Lanka Abu Dhabi
Matthew Cross Scotland 4 PNG Dubai
