Before the start of the crucial final of the ICC Champions Trophy, the first thing that both the teams wanted was to win the toss and opt for their choice. It was Indian skipper Virat Kohli who won the toss and surprisingly, decided to bowl first. Though keeping a track record of the tournament, many teams have won the game while chasing the target and keeping the same thing in mind, Indian skipper too opted to bowl first.
Though it looked like the correct decision, but the team management was surprised with captain’s decision as according to a report in NBT, the team management had decided to bat first in case Indian team won the toss and Kohli, bypassed the talk in the team meeting and invited Pakistan to bat first. On being asked by Anil Kumble why he overturned the decision taken in the team meeting, Kohli didn’t give a reply to the Head Coach.
This comes as a big surprise as the decision in team meetings are taken to be implemented while on the field but skipper did not comply with what was discussed in the meeting, which has now made the meeting look null and void.
The decision to bowl first went against India and Pakistan went on to post a huge target of 338, which automatically put pressure on defending champions and India lost the first wicket in form of Rohit Sharma in the very first over of the game. Virat Kohli followed him soon and all the hopes to chase it down were slowly coming to end.
Hardik Pandya, with his innings of 76 off 43, raised some hopes for Indian fans but after he got run out, it was all over for the defending champions and Pakistan clinched the Champions Trophy title for the first time.
Post the loss in the final, many are questioning the decision of Virat Kohli to bowl first and if it’s correct that Kohli did not follow the decision in the team meeting, then surely he is at fault.
