India’s women team have been the toast of the nation in the last few weeks or so and rightly deserves all the recognition it is getting now.
After the team qualified for the World Cup by playing the qualifiers, very few would have given them a chance to go far in the tournament in tough conditions in England but Mithali Raj & Co. exceeded all the expectations, as they beat the likes of England, New Zealand and Australia to make it to the finals. And although they fell short by just nine runs in the title-decider at The Lord’s, they have been lauded for their efforts.
They have showered with rewards from all over and were also hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after their arrival in the country. And the interactive session which was supposed to be of 12 minutes was so interesting that it turned out to be an hour and a half long session, containing questions, answers, advice and interesting queries.
As per a report in The Indian Express, Mr Modi was asked about his time management skills, his high energy levels and also his fashion designer during the session at the Race Course Road on Thursday (July 27).
The session began with the Prime Minister asking everyone in the room to clap for the team that fell agonisingly short of winning the World Cup before he lavished praise on the cricketers by saying that he and the entire nation was glued to the action from Lord’s on July 23.
Recalling the session, opening batswoman Poonam Raut said:
“He told us a lot of motivational things. We also had some questions for him. He asked him about how he handles the pressure of ruling the country. He replied that meditation and yoga were a big help. He told us ‘aap haarne ka dukh mat karo, aapne pura desh ka dil jeet liya hai’.”
The cricketers, in return, also asked Mr Modi some interesting questions like how he finds the energy to work for long hours. In reply, Mr Modi revealed that never skipping a yoga session is the secret behind it. He went on to say that he does not skip Yoga even on long flights while travelling around the world. The Prime Minister also recommended yoga sessions for the team, saying it will help them to enhance their concentration.
Then came a hilarious question of the evening when Harmanpreet Kaur that drew a laugh from Mr Modi. The star batswoman wanted to know if the Prime Minister had a special designer. Mr Modi had previously said that he didn’t have a designer, as he got his work done from a tailor in Ahmedabad. But the Prime Minister said that the tailor, who used to charge only Rs 20-25 in the past, has increased his fees significantly.
Mr. Modi went on to recall his own struggles in the early days, revealing how he used to wash his own clothes.
The memorable session ended with the Prime Minister taking photographs with each member of the team.
