Riding on his sublime 104-run knock in the second innings of the just-concluded first Test against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens, India skipper Virat Kohli moved up a spot to take the fifth position in the latest ICC Test rankings for batsmen. On the other hand, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja paid the price for going wicketless in the game as he slipped a place to be third in the bowlers’ standings while Bhuvneshwar Kumar attained his career-best rank.
The India skipper was dismissed for a rare duck in the first innings but produced a stunning knock in the second innings to give the hosts a real shot at an improbable victory against the Islanders. India were in a precarious position on the fifth day when overnight batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and KL Rahul departed early and the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha and other middle-order batsmen failed to deliver.
However, Kohli, who is top-ranked in both ODIs and T20Is, held firm from one end and scored 104 not out off just 119 balls to help India post 352 for 8, setting the visitors a target of 231. The century, which is Kohli’s 18th Test and 50th international ton, helped the Delhi-born star to pip Australia vice-captain David Warner to take fifth position.
Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan also reaped the reward for scoring 94 runs in the second innings, climbing a couple of places to reach 28th position.
In the bowlers’ ranking, fast-bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who bagged the Man of the Match award, also made significant gains, rising eight spots to reach a career-best 29th position while Mohammed Shami gained one place to take 18th position. Bhuvneshwar had picked up four wickets in each innings while Shami had picked up six wickets in the game.
On the other hand, Jadeja, who began the series with an opportunity to reclaim the top bowling and all-rounder rankings, failed to make his mark on the pacer-friendly wicket, thus ending up without any wicket to slip to third position. He also lost 20 points in the rankings for all-rounders.
For the visitors, wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella has gained three slots to reach 37th position among batsmen while off-spinner Dilruwan Perera has moved up three places to reach 22nd position among bowlers.
