The injury of Indian Test opener Murali Vijay doesn’t seem to relent as the stylish right-handed batsman twisted his ankle while playing for Tamil Nadu in a Ranji Trophy clash against Andhra Pradesh. He will be hoping that it isn’t a serious injury after having fair shares of injuries over the past few months.
Vijay who suffered a wrist injury during Australia’s tour of India earlier in the year missed the Test series in Sri Lanka after he complained of pain on his right wrist while taking part in a preparatory match. The BCCI medical team advised him to continue his rehabilitation programme, but his recent injury might hamper his chances of returning to the national squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka slated to start on November 16 at the Eden Gardens.
The loss of Vijay was the gain for Shikhar Dhawan who stormed his way back into the Test team and smashed two centuries in 3 matches. He looked in ominous touch and might be the preferred option with Vijay when the latter returns. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Murali Vijay should be an automatic choice as and when he is fit.
Lokesh Rahul has also played some gritty innings in the past and during the Border Gavaskar Trophy in India earlier in the year, the right-hander smashed six consecutive half-centuries and was instrumental in helping the home team win the series by a 2-1 margin.
Over the past few years, Vijay has established himself as the premier opener for the national team in the longest format of the game and has been one of those players who has scored runs consistently especially in overseas conditions. The stylish opener will be hoping to make a comeback during the Test series against Sri Lanka later in the year. He will also be a vital member of the team when India flies off to South Africa for a full series starting from 5th January.
