After Ashish Nehra informed captain Virat Kohli that the opening T20I against New Zealand would be his final international match, there has been speculations doing rounds that the veteran pacer’s decision to retire has come after getting dropped from the first two games.
Nehra, however, has quashed all rumours and stated that it is his personal decision.
Speaking to the media persons ahead of the 3rd and the final T20I against Australia, Nehra said:
“It’s my own decision. Match on Nov 1 is in Delhi. There’s no bigger thing than to retire in your hometown.”
“When I was selected for this series, I informed Virat (Kohli) and coach (Ravi) Shastri that I think Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) and (Jasprit) Bumrah are doing really well. And that this is the right time for me to go.”

When asked whether he will continue to play in the Indian Premier League, Nehra noted:
“If I have decided something, there is no going back. If I retire, I won’t even play the IPL.” A Senior BCCI Official had said to Cricketnext on Wednesday that Nehra had already spoken to Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri about his decision to hung up his boots following the 1st T20I against New Zealand. He has requested for a farewell match on his home ground.
“What we have heard is that Nehra has spoken to the captain and coach and informed them about his decision to retire after the T20 match in Delhi. Nehra has requested for one last match at his home ground and wants to go out on a high,” the official had said.
Nehra was selected in the squad for the three-match T20I series against Australia but haven’t played a match in the series so far especially because both pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are at the top of their game which has prevented Nehra from making into the playing XI.
Nehra remains the only player from the current group of players who made his international debut in the previous century. He made his Test debut under Mohammad Azharuddin in 1999 and went on to make his ODI debut a couple of years later. One of his most notable performances was his six-wicket haul against England during a 2003 World Cup game in Durban.
