Real Madrid are on their merry way, marching towards the La Liga title. They are also in a decent position in the Champions League and a lot of credit has to go to the Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.
The former Manchester United man now stands as the top goal scorer for the Spanish outfit in the domestic league and he has not scored more goals for the club in the Champions League, more than any other player in their history.
However, he is nowhere close to done and is now breaking some astonishing records in Europe’s elite competition. Ronaldo has now scored eight of the last nine goals in knockout rounds of the Champions League and has now scored 104 goals in the competition.
It is a ridiculous figure, as it is actually more than what some of the biggest clubs in Europe have scored throughout their European campaign. Here are five such clubs who have fewer goals than Cristiano Ronaldo himself, in the Champions League:
Club Ranking: 27; Goals Scored: 76; Times Participated: 9
The Greek outfit has always been home to some terrific players and they are genuine contenders for the domestic title in their country. But European glory has evaded them. They have had to sell a number of players in the past due to their financial position and their best run in the Champions League remains their semi-final loss to Ajax back in 1996. They have just 76 goals to their name in this competition, 27 goals less than CR7.
Olympique de Marseille:
Club Ranking – 32; Goals Scored – 84; Times Participated: 9
Marseille are one of the most historic clubs in France as they stand as the only team from the country to have lifted the Champions League. However, they are currently even struggling to get into the competition. They won the trophy back in 1993 but ever since, their status as European giants has fallen down. They have just 84 goals to their name, 19 less than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Club Ranking: 20; Goals Scored: 98; Times Participated: 12
Benfica is one of the most historic clubs in Europe. They have an academy that produces some of the finest talents in world football but have not been able to produce some who can lift the European trophy. They won their last European trophy back in 1962 and are regulars in the competition in the last few years. However, they have scored just 98 goals in their 12 attempts in the competition and have five goals less than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Club Ranking: 21; Goals Scored: 102; Times Participated: 15
Though they have failed to win the Champions League, they have tasted European success back in 1988 and are one of the regulars in the competitions from the lower leagues. They were also a part of the previous season, only to be knocked out early. They have one of the best academies in the world but do not have players who can lift them all the way. They have 102 goals to their name, a goal less than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Club Rank: 19; Goals Scored: 100; Times Participated: 7
Real Madrid’s local rivals Atletico Madrid stand as one of the most consistent clubs in Spain and in Europe in recent times. They were at the finals in 2014 and 2016 but failed to lift the trophy. They were thrashed 3-0 at the Bernabeu, thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick in the semi-final this year, and have little chance of progression. They have 100 goals to their name, three less than the Portuguese superstar.
