Drew McIntyre had an illustrious career in the WWE starting from the last decade. His stint started from Florida Championship Wrestling that landed him a job on the WWE main roster, later. Vince McMahon himself introduced him to the roster, as the chosen one that handed him a big push upon arrival.
However, with lack of planning around him, it came to an end, quickly and he became a side-kick. With a group named 3MB, he was made into a joke on the roster. It led him to his WWE release in the year 2014 after which he joined the Impact Wrestling promotion. After spending three years under their banner, he returned to WWE NXT, early this year to become the champion in the brand.
At Summerslam weekend, he was crowned with the title after defeating Bobby Roode. Expectations were there that he would continue to hold the title for a long time, going forward. But, in this past NXT Takeover: WarGames event during the Survivor Series weekend, his title run came to a sudden end. He lost the championship to Cien Almas on the show.
Unfortunately I did suffer an injury during my title defense at TakeOver. I’ve dealt with setbacks before. The reality is, I always come back better…There’s a scary thought for whomever is NXT champion come 2018… #TickTock

Later, it was disclosed that Drew McIntyre suffered a bicep injury during the end of the matchup. It also sidelined him from in-ring competition for an indefinite span. Although he did not require to undergo a surgery, he would have to stay away for a significant amount of time that did not give him the opportunity to have his title rematch.
Recently, an update was given on his injury by Ryan Satin of Pro-wrestling Sheet. According to him, the torn bicep will keep him away for a couple of months. His main roster show-up also got postponed due to this. It means he might just come back in time for Royal Rumble event where an NXT Takeover event is in-store.
It might happen he competes in his rematch and loses it against Almas. But, it will allow him to enter the Royal Rumble event, the very next day and return to the main roster. It is still not clear whether the creative team planned an NXT return or a main roster return in-reserve for him.
