There were not many expectations from this event. It had a lacklustre match card with no world title matches. We never took this event seriously, and we thought it would come out with predictable results only.
But the event was not bad. And most of the outcomes were not predictable at all. We appreciate the work of the Raw creative team for putting on a good event from a card with bad potentials. We all must appreciate that.
All the title matches took place first, then the non-title matches. We cannot remember the last time such a thing happened in a pay per view.
The first match between Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho produced the biggest shocker of the night. Who in the hell would have predicted a win for Jericho in this match? There were rumours all over the social media that Jericho will be leaving WWE after Payback. But all the rumours were proven wrong, and Jericho is now heading to Smackdown.
In some aspects, it is a good decision. They cannot afford to have Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens on the same show. They just needed to avoid another feud between the two. And Owens heading to Raw means they are going to arrange a feud between Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens surely.
The Cruiserweight championship match between Neville and Austin Aries could not live up to its expectations. This match had the potential to be the best match of the night. Instead, it could only turn out to be just a forgettable match of the event. The outcome could be good for the future of this feud, so we are complaining about it. It was a good match, but we think this could be booked in a way better.
The tag team championship match was very good. It was one of the best matches of this event. It was pacy, physical and really enjoyable. The way Hardys pulled the victory out, it was pretty interesting. Sheamus and Cesaro turned heel after this match. We were expecting to see something interesting at the end. So it was a little predictable anyway. Now, it would be exciting to see where this feud heads towards. Will the Hardys get their broken gimmick back? Or Ruby Hardy’s revelation of Hardys not turning Broken is true?
The Raw Women’s championship match was very good too. Bayley did a decent job in this match, and it marked one of the best performances of Alexa Bliss.
The match was booked for twelve minutes and it was really fun. Alexa Bliss made history by becoming the first woman to be both Raw and Smackdown Women’s champion. And to be honest, she rightfully deserved it.
Next, comes in the queue is the worst match of the night; the House of Horrors match. Seriously, what nonsense was that? A pre-taped fight between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt? A pre-taped fight in a pay per view event? Are you serious? This was by far the worst booking of this year. The match did come live when they head towards the ring, and love it or hate it, Jinder Mahal and the Singh brothers’ interference saved the match. Because there was nothing to gain from this feud, at least it helped to promote Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal’s match at Backlash.
Samoa Joe vs. Seth Rollins is another contender game. Yes, a contender of course but not for the best of the night, but for the worst. The match that had the potential to be the best match of the night turned out to be one of the worst. It was slow and hell boring. The crowd was really dead during it. Seth Rollins won the match, as he was compared to Jamie Lannister aka the Kingslayer. But it was a very bad look for Samoa Joe. He needed to win this match.
Moving on to the main event of the night; Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns. On paper, it was a bad match. This was the worst worked match between these two individuals. But they had to show Roman’s injury serious, so the booking was legit, as we say.
Braun dominant victory in this match will put him as a serious main eventer now. He badly needed to win this match. Roman did bleed at the end. It was not much of a PG stuff anyway.
Final Verdict – Overall, it was an average event. It could be a bad event but they did not do a bad job at the end. So, we give credits to the booking team. None of the matches was too good, but apart from two matches, none of the matches was too bad either. Jericho’s win was the biggest shock of the event, it was a good outcome, but a submission defeat for Kevin Owens is not a good outcome at all.
Alexa Bliss made history on this event, so in spite of being an average event, this will be remembered forever.
